The transition to adulthood is a time of opportunity and challenge, as young people make choices that will determine their futures. The longitudinal Edmonton Transitions Study (ETS; for more detail click here) presents a unique opportunity to examine how experiences in the late teens to early 20s are related to the nature and quality of life in the early 30s, 40s, and 50s. Started by Dr. Harvey Krahn (Department of Sociology, University of Alberta) and colleagues, the ETS tracked a large group of “Class of 1985” high school seniors through the early 20s, into their 30s, and age 43. We completed our age 50 survey in 2017, 32 years after the study began. And with a new grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, we will be following up participants as they near 60! We have published many studies from these data with topics such as the course and predictors of trajectories of mental health (happiness, depression, anger, self-esteem), social support, and social concerns from late adolescence to midlife; early antecedents of marital and family relationships, midlife generativity, and career satisfaction; and individual differences in how young people make the transition to adulthood.
